A deep navy or burgundy towel looks rich on day one. A few months later, it can look a little tired: paler along the folds, dusty in patches, or slightly different from the matching rug beside it. The good news is that most fading comes from how towels are washed and dried, not from the towel itself, so a few small habits make a real difference.
Here are seven habits that help dark and coloured towels keep their depth for longer.
Why Dark Towels Seem to Fade Faster
Every coloured fabric loses a little dye over time. On a dark towel, you simply notice it more, because the contrast between deep colour and pale, worn areas is stronger. Three things speed it up: hot water, harsh detergents or bleach, and strong heat or sunlight. Friction from crowded washing machines adds to it.
That is useful to know, because all four are things you control.
7 Habits That Help Dark Towels Keep Their Colour
1. Wash dark towels separately, at least at first
New coloured towels can release some loose dye in their first few washes. Wash them on their own, or with similar dark shades, so the colour does not transfer onto lighter items. Keep them away from white towels especially. If you are weighing up the trade-offs, our piece on white vs coloured towels covers what each is like to live with.
2. Choose cooler water
Hot water makes cotton fibres swell and lets dye escape more easily. A cool or lukewarm wash is gentler on colour. Check the care label on your towels and stay within the temperature it suggests.
3. Use less detergent, not more
It is tempting to add extra detergent for a fresher wash. In practice, too much can leave residue on the fibres, which dulls dark colours and makes towels feel stiff. Use the amount recommended for your load size, and a detergent made for coloured fabrics if you have one. If your towels already feel rough, see why towels feel rough after washing.
4. Skip chlorine bleach
Bleach strips colour and can leave blotchy marks that do not come back. For stains on coloured towels, spot-treat gently and wash promptly instead.
5. Turn towels inside out and do not overload the drum
Turning towels inside out reduces surface rubbing. Leaving some space in the drum lets water and detergent rinse out properly and reduces friction between items. A crowded machine is hard on colour and on the pile.
6. Go easy on fabric softener
Softener can coat cotton fibres and, over time, affect how a towel feels and absorbs. We look at this in detail in is fabric softener ruining your towels?
7. Dry in shade or on a gentle setting
Long hours of strong midday sun and very hot tumble drying can both dull dark dyes. When you can, dry towels in a shaded, airy spot. If you use a dryer, choose a low or medium setting and take towels out while they are still slightly warm. In cooler months, our tips on drying towels faster in winter are a good place to start.
What About Vinegar and Salt?
You will often see advice to add white vinegar or salt to the wash to "lock in" colour. The evidence for this is thin, so we would not rely on it. Vinegar in the rinse can help dissolve leftover detergent residue, but the habits above do more for your towels than any additive.
