Most people pick a bath rug by colour and only think about size when it arrives. Then it either looks lost in front of the vanity or runs into the toilet base. Getting the bath rug size right takes a tape measure and about two minutes, and it changes how the whole bathroom feels underfoot.
Our premium cotton bath rugs come in two sizes: 17" x 24" (about 43 x 61 cm) and 20" x 30" (about 51 x 76 cm). Here is how to decide between them.
What the two sizes actually look like
The difference is only a few inches, but it matters on a bathroom floor.
- 17" x 24" (small): a compact rug that fits one or two steps of standing room. It is priced at ₹650.
- 20" x 30" (large): noticeably longer, with room for both feet to land comfortably and a step or two to the side. It is priced at ₹899.
Both are made from 100% cotton and are machine washable at home, so the choice comes down to space and habit rather than quality.
Measure the spot before you choose
Skip guessing and measure the floor where the rug will go.
Step 1: Find the standing zone
Stand where you actually stand after a shower or at the basin. Note how far your feet spread and how many steps you take on the spot. That footprint is the minimum the rug needs to cover.
Step 2: Measure the free floor
Measure the clear space between the tub or shower edge and the nearest obstacle, such as the vanity or toilet. Leave a few inches of bare floor around the rug so it does not bunch against fixtures or block a door.
Step 3: Compare with the sizes
If the free space is under about 30 inches in either direction, the small rug is the safer fit. If you have more room, the large one gives better coverage.
When the 17" x 24" rug is the better pick
- Small and compact bathrooms. In a narrow bathroom, a smaller rug leaves walking space and does not creep under the door.
- Basin or vanity placement. A rug in front of the sink only needs to cover where one person stands.
- Layering a second rug. Many households keep one near the shower and one at the basin. Two small rugs are easier to wash and rotate than one big one.
- Guest or powder rooms. Compact bathrooms are a good place for a tidy accent. If you are setting up for visitors, our note on getting a guest bathroom ready covers the rest of the checklist.
When the 20" x 30" rug makes more sense
- Directly outside the shower or tub. This is where water and wet feet land, so extra coverage helps.
- Family bathrooms. More people and more splashes mean a larger landing area is more practical, including for children who step out in a hurry.
- Roomier bathrooms. A larger rug in a larger room looks more balanced, and a small one can seem like an afterthought.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Buying on colour alone. A rug that matches your towels but covers too little floor will not do its job. If colour is your starting point, see our bath rug and towel colour pairings.
- Ignoring door swing. Check that the door still opens fully over the rug.
- Forgetting the drying time. A bigger rug takes longer to dry, especially in humid or winter weather. Plan to hang it up between uses.
- Not planning for slips. Rugs can move on smooth tiles. Our article on why a bath rug keeps slipping explains what helps.
Colours that work with either size
Both sizes come in the same range of shades. For a calm, neutral look, the Silver Grey Premium Bath Rug pairs easily with white or grey towels. If you prefer something deeper, try the Black Premium Bath Rug, or add a softer touch with the Soft Pink Premium Bath Rug.
To pull the room together, add a matching bath towel set in a related shade.
Keeping the rug looking good
Whichever size you choose, regular washing keeps cotton rugs fresh and absorbent. Our guide on how to wash and dry cotton bath rugs walks through the routine. If you are still unsure whether a rug or a mat suits your bathroom, read bath rug vs bath mat.
Quick recommendation
Choose 17" x 24" for compact spaces, basins and second rugs. Choose 20" x 30" for the spot right outside the shower or tub when you have the floor space. Not sure? Measure first, then browse our bath rugs and pick the size that fits your floor.
