You buy a set of soft towels, wash them a few times, and one day they feel stiff, scratchy and strangely less absorbent. It is one of the most common towel complaints in Indian homes, and in most cases the towels are not "worn out". The cause is usually something in the wash routine or the water.
The good news is that rough towels can often be brought back. Here are the usual culprits, and what to do about each one.
The Main Reasons Towels Turn Rough
1. Hard water minerals
Many Indian cities have hard water, which carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Over repeated washes, these minerals can settle into cotton loops and leave them feeling stiff. If your kettle or bathroom taps show white scale, your towels are probably seeing the same minerals.
2. Too much detergent
More detergent does not mean cleaner towels. Thick terry loops hold on to soap that a short cycle fails to rinse out. The leftover residue makes fabric feel coarse and can dull its absorbency over time. Measure the detergent, and use the lower end of the recommended amount for a lightly loaded machine.
3. Fabric softener
This one surprises people. Softener works by leaving a coating on fibres. On towels, that coating can reduce how well they soak up water, and it builds up with each wash. If your towels feel waxy or push water around instead of absorbing it, skip the softener for a few cycles.
4. Over-drying with high heat
Running a dryer on a very hot setting, or leaving towels in the machine long after they are dry, stresses cotton fibres. Air drying has its own catch: towels dried completely flat and still can come out crisp. Both are fixable.
5. An overloaded machine
Towels need room to move so water and detergent can pass through the loops. A packed drum rinses poorly, which brings you straight back to detergent residue.
How to Soften Rough Towels Again
- Run a rinse-only reset. Wash the towels on their own with no detergent and one cup of white vinegar in the softener compartment. Vinegar helps loosen mineral and soap buildup.
- Follow with a second plain rinse. This clears the vinegar and any loosened residue.
- Dry them properly. Shake each towel out before drying. Dry in the sun or a well-ventilated spot, or use a medium dryer setting, and take them out as soon as they are dry.
- Fluff by hand. A good shake and a quick fold between your palms helps the loops stand up again.
Use vinegar as an occasional reset rather than a weekly habit, and keep it away from any towel with a care label that advises against it.
A Wash Routine That Keeps Towels Soft
- Use a measured amount of mild detergent and skip fabric softener.
- Wash towels together, away from lint-shedding items, and fill the drum only about three quarters full.
- Choose an extra rinse if your water is hard or your machine uses very little water.
- Wash in warm water for everyday use and follow the care label.
- Dry fully and promptly. A damp towel left bundled up will smell musty, which is a different problem altogether.

Does the Towel Itself Matter?
Care is the biggest factor, but construction plays a part too. Dense, heavier cotton towels tend to hold their plush feel through repeated washing better than very light ones, as long as they are rinsed and dried well. If you are not sure which weight suits you, our GSM explainer for Indian homes walks through the options.
If your current towels are past rescuing, a heavier set is a sensible upgrade. Quick Answers
Can I wash rough towels with vinegar?
Yes, as an occasional reset. Use about one cup in the rinse step of a no-detergent wash, then rinse again.
Why do my towels feel rough after sun drying?
Towels dried completely still can feel crisp. Shaking them out before and after drying, or finishing for a few minutes in a dryer on low, helps.
Should I use fabric softener to make towels softer?
It is better to avoid it. Softener can leave a coating that makes towels less absorbent over time.
The Bottom Line
Rough towels usually point to buildup, not a bad towel. Cut back on detergent, drop the softener, give them room in the machine and dry them promptly. Do that, and most towels will feel noticeably softer within a wash or two.
