What Do Guests Notice About Towels in a Homestay?

Guests rarely write a review about the towels. They write one when the towels are thin, scratchy, mismatched or smell faintly of last week's laundry. For a homestay, Airbnb or small guesthouse host, towels are one of the quiet details that decide whether a stay feels cared for or merely adequate.

This article covers what to stock, how many to keep, and what to look for in a towel that has to survive frequent washing.

Why Towels Matter More Than Most Hosts Expect

A guest arrives, drops their bag and heads to the bathroom. The towel is often the first thing they touch. A thick, clean, neatly folded towel signals that the rest of the property has been looked after too. A rough or greying one signals the opposite, however nice the room is.

Towels are also a repeat cost. They get washed after every stay, often at higher temperatures than home use. That makes durability a practical concern, not just a comfort one.

What Guests Actually Notice

1. Feel and absorbency

Soft, absorbent cotton is the baseline. 100% cotton towels absorb water well and feel comfortable against skin. If you are unsure how weight affects feel, our GSM guide for Indian homes explains the difference between lighter and denser towels.

2. Colour and cleanliness

White reads as clean and hotel-like, and it can be washed hot. The trade-off is that marks and wear show sooner. Coloured towels hide stains but can fade with repeated hot washes. Many hosts choose white for bath towels and add colour through a bath rug. Our piece on white vs coloured towels weighs this up in more detail.

3. A matched set

Towels bought in one go look consistent and fold neatly. Mixing old and new makes a room look improvised. Buying matched sets also makes replacement easier, because you can retire a whole set at once.

4. Freshness

A musty smell is the most common complaint in humid weather. Dry towels fully between guests and avoid folding them while damp. If you host through the monsoon, see why towels smell musty and how to fix it.

5. Something underfoot

A bath rug keeps the floor dry and gives guests a place to step out of the shower. Cotton bath rugs are easy to wash between stays, which matters when the turnover is quick.

How Many Towels Should You Stock?

A simple rule is three full sets per guest bed: one in use, one in the wash and one ready on the shelf. For a two-guest room, that means three sets of two. If your laundry runs on a slower cycle, or you host back to back, add a fourth.

  • Per guest: one large bath towel and one smaller hand or face towel.
  • Per bathroom: one bath rug, plus a spare in the cupboard.
  • Beach or pool properties: a separate beach towel so bath towels stay indoors.

Our article on how many towels a home actually needs has a longer breakdown you can adapt for guest rooms.

Choosing Towels That Handle Frequent Washing

For a rental, look for 100% cotton, a weight that feels substantial but still dries in reasonable time, and a consistent colour you can reorder later. Two of our sets suit this use:

Not sure which weight fits? Compare them in our 550 GSM and 700 GSM collections, or browse all bath towel sets. For the floor, our bath rugs come in several colours to pair with white towels.

Care Routine for a Quick Turnaround

  • Wash towels after every guest, separately from sheets and anything with lint.
  • Use a normal amount of detergent. Too much leaves residue and stiffens fabric.
  • Skip heavy fabric softener, which can reduce absorbency over time. We cover this in Is Fabric Softener Ruining Your Towels?
  • Dry completely before folding and storing.
  • Inspect each set during changeover and retire any that are thin, stained or frayed.

Small Touches That Make Towels Feel Intentional

  • Fold one large and one small towel together and place them on the bed or a bathroom shelf.
  • Add a rug in a neutral shade that matches the room.
  • Leave a short note on where to hang used towels so they dry between uses.

The Bottom Line

Good towels will not make a property on their own, but poor ones can undo a lot of effort. Pick soft 100% cotton, keep the set consistent, stock enough to cover your laundry cycle and keep them fresh. If you are refreshing your guest bathroom, start with a towel set and a matching rug, and build from there.
