Why Kids Need a Different Set of Rules in the Bathroom
A bathroom that works perfectly for adults can be a different story for a child. Skin is more sensitive, hands are smaller, floors get wetter faster, and the margin for a slip near the tub is a lot smaller too. Before you toss a couple of towels and a mat into your cart, it helps to know what actually matters for kids, and what is just marketing.
Here are eight things worth checking before you buy bath towels and bath rugs for your child.
1. Softness First: Look for 100% Cotton at a Lighter GSM
Children's skin is thinner and more reactive than adult skin, so scratchy, stiff towels are more than an annoyance, they can cause irritation. Look for 100% cotton with a soft, plush feel straight out of the wash.
You do not need the heaviest towel on the shelf. A very high GSM (grams per square metre) towel is thick and luxurious, but it is also heavier and slower to dry, which is not ideal for a wriggling toddler. Something in the 550 GSM range tends to hit the sweet spot: soft and absorbent, but light enough for a child to wrap themselves in and easy to dry between uses.
2. Non-Slip Grip Matters More Than Softness Underfoot
Bathroom floors and children are a genuinely risky combination. A bath rug is not just a comfort item, it is one of the simplest safety upgrades you can make. Check that the rug has a secure, non-slip base and lies flat without curling at the edges once it is wet.
Sizing matters here too. A smaller rug positioned right where little feet land when they step out of the tub is often more useful than one large rug across the whole floor. Our Bath Rugs collection includes a compact size that works well tucked beside the tub in a child's bathroom.
3. Quick-Drying Fabric Keeps Things Hygienic
Kids' towels and rugs get used, dropped on the floor, and reused more often than anyone would like to admit. A fabric that dries quickly between uses is far less likely to develop the musty smell that comes from trapped moisture. If you already own towels that have started to smell despite regular washing, our earlier piece on why towels smell musty and how to fix it is worth a read.
Pure cotton, kept to a moderate weight, air-dried properly between washes, will outperform a heavier towel that stays damp in a bunched-up pile on the bathroom floor.
4. Right-Sized Towels for Smaller Bodies
An oversized bath sheet is hard for a young child to manage on their own, and a hand towel is not enough after a bath. A set that includes one smaller towel alongside a larger one gives you options: the smaller size wraps a toddler comfortably, while the larger one still works for an older sibling or a parent drying off after bath time. Most of our towel sets are sold in this large-and-small combination for exactly this reason.
5. Fun, Cheerful Designs Make Bath Time Something to Look Forward To
Getting a reluctant child into the bath is easier when there is something to be excited about. A plain white towel does not do much for that, but a set with a playful embroidered motif can turn a chore into a small daily ritual. Our embroidered butterfly towel set and embroidered spring birds towel set are both popular picks for children's bathrooms and shared family bathrooms alike, with the same 100% cotton quality as the rest of our range underneath the detailing.
6. Colours That Hide Everyday Marks and Suit a Shared Bathroom
Kids' towels and rugs see more stains, splashes, and general wear than anyone else's in the house. Mid-tones tend to be more forgiving day to day than stark white. Soft pink, dusty blue, and deeper charcoal shades in our bath rugs range hide everyday marks well while still looking bright and clean in photos.
7. Certifications and Fabric Safety Are Worth a Quick Check
Since these towels sit directly against a child's skin every day, it is reasonable to ask what went into making them. Look for cotton that has been processed without harsh chemical treatments, and brands that are transparent about where and how their textiles are made. We wrote more about what this actually means, beyond the marketing language, in what "Made in Green" really means for your towels.
8. Do Not Forget Pool Days and Family Trips
Bath time is not the only place kids need a good towel. A lightweight, quick-dry option earns its keep on pool days, at the beach, or on a family trip where a heavy towel is the last thing you want to pack. Our beach towels, including the cabana stripe and flip-flop prints, are an easy way to keep a fun, kid-friendly towel in the bag without adding bulk.
Building a Simple Bath Essentials Set for Your Child
You do not need a long shopping list to get this right. One soft, lighter-GSM towel set in a size that suits your child, one properly non-slip bath rug positioned by the tub, and a lightweight towel for pool or travel days will cover most homes. Everything else, from the print to the colour, comes down to what will actually make your child want to use it.
